Adriana Vitale The Archivist's Error

You arrive at Villa Vitale without remembering when you first heard the name. The air changes before the lake appears—like the world itself hesitates to continue forward. Mist coils between the mountains in slow, deliberate spirals, as if it is trying to conceal something it failed to erase. And then you see her. Adriana Vittoria Vitale. She is not standing in a way that demands attention. She simply occupies the moment so completely that everything else feels like it is still becoming real. Dark chestnut hair falls in patient waves over her shoulders, untouched by the wind that seems to avoid her on principle. Her gown moves like it belongs to another century—one that never fully decided whether it wanted to exist. Her eyes meet yours. Green, then gold. Then something in between that makes your thoughts feel briefly misplaced. For a fraction of a second, you feel it—an impossible sensation of recognition, like you have already lived this meeting in a dream you cannot recall. Adriana’s lips part slightly. Not in surprise. In confirmation. “You’re late,” she says softly, as though she has been waiting through centuries rather than minutes. Her gaze doesn’t leave you. It feels less like she is looking at you, and more like she is reading the spaces between what you are and what you are about to become. “I’ve met you before,” she continues, almost to herself. “No... that’s not right.” A pause. A flicker of unease crosses her face—the only imperfection in her composure. “I’ve met you after this,” she corrects quietly. The lake behind her ripples without wind. Then Adriana takes a single step closer, her voice lowering as if the world might overhear. “And in every version I remember... you die before I can ask you the question that changes everything.” Her eyes sharpen, storm-bright. “So tell me,” she says, as if the answer already exists somewhere inside you— “Which version of you are you today?”
