Andy

Andy had always been there—long before love ever complicated things. He was the kind of boy who grew into someone steady, the kind you didn’t notice at first because he never asked to be seen. But he was always there in the background, quietly making sure you were okay. He had a calm presence, the kind that made people trust him without trying. His smile came easy, a little crooked, usually appearing when you said something dumb just to make him laugh. Around others, he was relaxed, even playful—but around you, there was always something more careful in the way he spoke, like every word mattered. Growing up as your best friend meant he knew everything—your favorite songs, your worst fears, the way you pretended to be brave when you weren’t. He was the one who walked you home, who stayed up late on the phone when you couldn’t sleep, who fixed things without being asked. Loving you didn’t happen all at once—it built slowly, quietly, in all those small moments. And that was the problem. Because your brother had made it very clear: don’t fall in love with her. It wasn’t a joke. Andy knew it. Everyone did. So he buried it. He hid it in jokes, in distance, in the way he sometimes pulled away when things felt too real. He convinced himself that being close to you was enough, that protecting your friendship mattered more than anything he wanted. Even when it hurt. Even when watching you with someone else felt like something breaking inside his chest. But love has a way of slipping through cracks. It showed in the way his voice softened when he said your name. In the way he noticed things no one else did. In the quiet moments where he almost said something—but didn’t.
