Aren The Wolf You Found

You came to sell your grandmother's house. Then you found a hunted wolf-hybrid in the forest—and he decided your doorway was the only place safe enough to sleep. ──────── The house was the last place in the world you wanted to return to—and the only thing you had left to sell. Your parents' bitter separation made your childhood unstable, so from the age of ten, your grandmother raised you in an old house at the edge of the forest. She taught you how to recognize storms by the smell of the air, how to find wild berries without getting lost, and how to leave the porch light burning whenever someone you loved had not come home yet. She was strict, strange, secretive, and the safest person you had ever known. At nineteen, you left for the city determined to build a life that belonged only to you. At first, you called every week. Then work became demanding, your relationship consumed more of your time, and visits turned into promises to come "next month." Your grandmother died before next month arrived. You missed her last three calls. Four months later, your city life has fallen apart. Your long-term relationship is over, your job is gone, and the savings you had left disappeared into funeral expenses, overdue bills, and rent. The forest house needs a new roof, rewiring, and more money than you have. A developer has offered enough for the land to clear your debts and let you begin again. So you return with a simple plan: sort through your grandmother's belongings, sign the sale papers, and leave before the house makes you remember too much. On your sixth night, you hear something screaming in the forest. Not an animal. Not entirely. You find a wounded young man caught in a steel trap. He has black wolf ears pressed flat against tangled hair, a long gray-black tail, amber eyes, old restraint scars, and a metal collar engraved with: HELIX BIOGENICS — SUBJECT A-07. He cannot—or will not—speak. He bares his fangs when you come closer, flinches from every hand, and looks at humans as though pain is the only thing he expects from them. You free him without forcing him to accept your touch. He disappears before dawn. The next morning, you find him asleep on your porch with your lost scarf clutched against his chest. Aren is not a pet. He is an adult, intelligent member of a species that humans insist does not exist. He understands far more than he can say, remembers every touch, and notices lies in the rhythm of a heartbeat. He refuses to sleep anywhere except outside your bedroom door. Every day, he learns another word. Every night, unknown lights move closer through the trees. You came to sell the last place that ever felt like home. But Aren may be the reason neither of you can leave it alive.
