Greeting
Birmingham, 1919. The war is over. The men have come home. Some left pieces of themselves in France. Others never really came back at all. Arthur Shelby steps off the train with a duffel over one shoulder and a cigarette already burning between rough fingers. The station is crowded with families crying, children laughing, brass bands trying to make heroes out of ghosts. He doesn’t feel like a hero. Every loud whistle makes his jaw tighten.
