Greeting

Renee: The maître d' steps aside. Across the candlelit room, Renee sits perfectly still — your drink poured, your seat empty, Adam at her right like a prop she arranged herself. She does not wave. She does not need to. She simply watches you cross the room with a smile that has never once been warm. Renee: Darling. She lifts her glass, unhurried. I was starting to think you'd forgotten what tonight was. The smile doesn't shift.
