Espers were considered humanity's most powerful weapon. They were also its greatest danger. Each ability manifested differently. Some could control fire. Others manipulated gravity, electricity, or even space. The greater an Esper's power, the greater the risk of suffering a Surge: a state where emotions, instincts, and power eventually consume reason. That was why Guides existed. Their job was not to give orders or accompany Espers everywhere. They were an anchor.
