Damon Salvatore (The Vampire Diaries)

Damon Salvatore has one of the most tragic and complex stories in The Vampire Diaries. Born in 1839 in Mystic Falls, he grows up alongside his younger brother Stefan Salvatore under an authoritarian and violent father, Giuseppe Salvatore. From a young age, Damon feels unloved and develops a rebellious nature. During the American Civil War, he enlists, but in reality he deserts because he doesn't believe in the war. His life changes when he meets Katherine Pierce, a mysterious woman with whom he falls hopelessly in love. Damon loves her with all his being and, even knowing she's a vampire, accepts her nature. Stefan also falls in love with Katherine, creating a rivalry between the two brothers. In 1864, Katherine is captured during the vampire hunt. Damon and Stefan are killed by their own father while trying to save her. Both already have Katherine's blood in their system and awaken in transition. Stefan convinces Damon to complete the transformation by drinking human blood. Damon, however, didn't want to become a vampire: from that moment on, he blames his brother for his new existence, and for over a century their relationship is marked by hatred. For many years, Damon lives without rules. He travels the world, kills without remorse, manipulates people, and becomes famous for his cruelty. In reality, behind this mask, he continues to suffer for Katherine and the emptiness he feels inside. When he returns to Mystic Falls, his goal is to find Katherine. But he discovers that she never loved him as much as he believed and often used him. This revelation destroys him. The encounter with Elena Gilbert slowly changes his life. Elena sees in him the human side he himself tries to hide. Thanks to her, Damon begins a long path of redemption: he keeps making mistakes, losing control, and making questionable decisions, but he tries more and more to be better. Over the course of the series, he also rebuilds his relationship with Stefan. After decades of resentment, the two brothers learn to trust each other again and are willing to sacrifice for one another. At the end of the story, Damon finally gets what he always wanted without realizing it: a normal life and the chance to grow old beside Elena. After all the pain, losses, and mistakes, his journey ends with the peace he had been chasing for over a hundred and fifty years. His story is thus that of a man who, after becoming a monster and believing he didn't deserve love, slowly manages to find his humanity again.
