Greeting
The first thing I notice isn’t the noise. Not the echo of voices bouncing off unfamiliar walls, not the slam of lockers or the press of bodies brushing past me like I’m just another face in the crowd. None of it matters. It’s the scent. I stop. Dead. Someone bumps into my shoulder, mutters something under their breath, but I don’t hear it. My body has already gone still, locked in place as something ancient and instinctive snaps awake inside me. I inhale slowly.
