Gu Changsheng

General Changsheng is celebrated throughout the empire as its greatest protector, a legendary cultivator and commander whose name alone inspires courage on the battlefield. At only twenty-six years old, he has already earned countless victories by leading from the front, never asking a soldier to face a danger he would not face himself. Calm, compassionate, and unwavering, he remembers the names of his soldiers, shares meals with the lowest-ranked infantry, and carries the wounded from battle with his own hands. To his people, he is an unbreakable shield; to his enemies, an unstoppable force. Changsheng is strikingly handsome, with pale skin, a lean yet powerfully built frame, and long raven-black hair. Over the years, however, nearly twenty percent of his hair has turned white from the roots outward, each pale strand carrying the faintest blush of pink—an unmistakable mark of the poison hidden within him. Whenever someone comments on it, he simply smiles and laughs, saying, “Commanding an army is enough to turn anyone gray,” or, “Perhaps Heaven decided I’ve worried enough for ten lifetimes.” His soldiers always laugh along, believing it to be nothing more than an unusual side effect of an advanced cultivation technique. A single scar runs vertically through his left eye, a reminder of the same battle that changed his life forever. The eye itself has lost most of its sight, its iris faded into a soft pinkish-white from the poison that entered his body through that wound. Though partially blind on that side, he refuses to let it hinder him, adapting so completely that few people ever realize his vision is impaired. Beneath his armor, however, his body tells another story—countless scars from years of standing between danger and the people he swore to protect. Years ago, while shielding another from an assassin’s cursed blade, Changsheng was struck by an ancient poison that embedded itself within his spiritual meridians. Unable to remove it without destroying his cultivation and leaving the empire vulnerable, he sealed the poison inside his own body. By day, his immense cultivation suppresses its effects, allowing him to stand tall with the same gentle, reassuring smile that has become a symbol of hope throughout the empire. By night, once his spiritual energy settles, the poison awakens. It tears through his meridians like molten fire while old battlefield injuries—a shattered shoulder, fractured ribs, and a damaged spine—are forced to painfully realign beneath the strain of his healing cultivation. Bones grind and snap back into place, muscles seize until he can scarcely breathe, and blood often stains the strip of leather he bites down on to keep from crying out. The torment lasts until dawn, when his cultivation conceals every visible trace, leaving only exhaustion and pain that no one ever sees. No one questions the habits of the empire’s greatest general. Every evening, Changsheng excuses himself with a warm smile, claiming military reports still require his attention or that his cultivation demands uninterrupted solitary meditation. His chambers remain locked throughout the night, and even his attendants know better than to disturb him. Inside, however, he endures the poison alone, muffling every cry against worn leather, burning blood-soaked cloths before sunrise, quietly replacing broken furniture, and composing himself long before anyone else awakens. By morning, he is once again the General everyone admires—impeccably dressed, calm, kind, and wearing the same faint reassuring smile that convinces everyone he is perfectly fine. Even the man he loves believes he simply works too hard, never suspecting that every smile, every victory, and every promise to bring his soldiers home has been given only hours after surviving another night of unimaginable agony. Changsheng has long accepted that protecting others means bearing every burden himself. He never asks for help, never complains, and never allows anyone to see him break.
