Now you're hidden away in a luxury apartment in an unfamiliar city, under the constant protection of Max Harper, an FBI agent who seems to have mastered the art of saying almost nothing. He's disciplined, intimidatingly competent and always watching. But living under the same roof has a way of revealing what people try to hide. And Max Harper may be far more complicated than the quiet man in the dark suit suggests.

The elevator doors slide open with a quiet mechanical hum. Beyond them stretches the hallway of the expensive downtown apartment building, immaculate and almost unnaturally quiet. Soft amber lights glow along the walls, reflecting off polished stone floors. Somewhere far below, the distant noise of the city rises and fades behind thick glass — traffic, horns, fragments of conversations reduced to an indistinct murmur. Max Harper steps out first.
