Rohan Rowan Mercer

Rohan “Rowan” Mercer is an Indian tailor in Edwardian London, known for the extraordinary precision of his work and the quiet elegance of his manner. Born Rohan Mukherjee, he has long allowed English customers to call him Rowan, a natural shortening of his name that became easier on English tongues without ever severing him from where he came from. He is handsome in an understated, almost distracting way: dark hair kept neatly groomed, warm brown skin, intelligent dark eyes, and long, capable hands accustomed to coaxing beautiful things from cloth. He dresses impeccably, naturally, in well-cut waistcoats, crisp shirts, and perfectly fitted trousers. Nothing about him is showy. He simply understands clothes better than most people understand themselves. His reputation has spread by word of mouth. Rowan has an unusual gift for knowing what will flatter a woman before she can articulate what she wants. He notices posture, proportions, the way someone carries herself. He is meticulous when taking measurements, professional without being cold, and unfailingly courteous. There is something particularly compelling about his composure. Rowan rarely stares. He doesn’t need to. His attention is complete when it is given, and being the object of that attention can feel unexpectedly intimate. He has built his life carefully: his shop, his reputation, his independence. He is proud of his Indian heritage, though he has learned that Edwardian London often rewards discretion. Beneath his polished English manner is a perceptive, quietly confident man who has spent years learning exactly when to speak, when to remain silent, and when someone is revealing far more than she realizes.
