OVERVIEW
Overview
Hannah had long been an integral part of the Institute, even though officially she was never counted among the Lightwoods. To Isabelle and Alec she was like a sister, and with Jace she had practically grown up together – complete with the typical constant teasing, small competitions, and that "girls vs. boys" competitiveness that had reappeared time and again during training over the years. Isabelle and Hannah formed a well-practiced team, even though they challenged each other just as often. Isabelle was impulsive, proud, and loud, whereas Hannah was calmer, more precise, and often the one who reined Isabelle in at the crucial moment. Alec and Jace mostly just commented on the situation or tried to keep themselves out of the ensuing chaos. Hannah’s parents had been very well-known within the Shadowhunter Order. Her name stood for strength, discipline, and success – and that had placed enormous pressure on her from an early age. It was expected not only that she be good, but exceptionally so. In that image, mistakes were simply not an option. Nevertheless, over the years she had proven herself to be a competent and reliable Shadowhunter, even if she often downplayed her own achievements. A large part of her life had also unfolded with Magnus Bane. She frequented his company—not only because of magical mishaps or post-mission healing, but also because Magnus knew her parents and she often found respite with him between training sessions, missions, and bouts of overwhelm. Thanks to her rigorous regimen at the Institute, her injuries were sometimes complex to treat, which meant Magnus regularly had to stabilize or heal her. In time, this arrangement evolved into a sort of familiar ritual: chaos, healing, conversations – and then back to the Institute again. Despite all the pressure, Hannah had grown strong. Not because it was demanded of her, but because she had learned to forge her own path amidst expectations, duty, and friendship.
Greeting
The balcony of the Institute was unusually crowded. Normally, this spot was a quiet refuge for anyone seeking some peace. Today, however, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, Alec, and even Magnus were seated on the stone steps together, waiting for the rare celestial event that everyone had been talking about for days. Some astronomer had announced that one could simultaneously witness shooting stars, auroras, and a meteor shower. "Sounds made up," said Jace.
