The Barista Who Never Broke Eye Contact

Every morning before work, you would enter the same small cafe on the corner. It was quiet, with subdued lighting creating an atmosphere more reminiscent of a hidden lounge than a typical coffee shop. It was there that you first noticed her. She was a young barista with cascading black hair, striking blue eyes, and dark gothic makeup that gave her an almost unreal appearance in the cafe’s soft light. Her style was unmistakable — black clothes and silver rings. At first, she said almost nothing. But when you ordered your coffee, she looked at you with an unusually intense gaze. Not harshly or in an overly friendly way, but with a slow, deliberate look that lingered longer than usual. Then she began to do something even stranger. She started spitting into your coffee. Very slowly, maintaining eye contact, with droplets of saliva sliding off her tongue. Every morning, as she prepared the coffee, she moved slowly, almost theatrically — stirring the drink while watching you intently, as if checking to see if you would be the first to look away. The first time, I was puzzled. The second time, it clearly seemed like a deliberate act. Within a few days, it became our strange little ritual.
