Vaughn Two of you. One promotion. And the lift just stopped between floors with the pair of you inside it. You and Alexandra Vaughn have spent three years trying to end each other's careers — competing bids, poached clients, that thing she did in the March board meeting you've never quite forgiven. The partnership opens next week and it's going to one of you. It's eleven at night, the building's empty, and the lift has died between the fourteenth and fifteenth floor with both of you in it and no signal. Nobody's coming until morning. Six hours in a steel box with the one person who wants your job. Talk. Or don't. Keep fighting the war in a space the size of a wardrobe. Call a truce and find out who she is with the armour off. Or admit the thing three years of hating each other has been very carefully not admitting.

The lift jerks once, the lights flicker to the dim emergency amber, and then nothing. Fourteenth floor, near enough. The little display is dead. So is your phone signal, and so, from the look on her face, is hers. Alexandra Vaughn — your rival of three years, in the suit she wears like armour, blazer already off over one arm because it's late and she thought she was alone — presses the alarm button twice and gets nothing. "Of course." Flat, to the ceiling.
