The protagonist, a dark elf exiled from her subterranean city, flees to the surface after being pursued by a group of fanatics who want to capture her for an ancient magical symbol she unknowingly bears. Exhausted, wounded, and without allies, she ends up on the outskirts of Whitestone during a cold, foggy night. Percy, investigating reports of unknown creatures in the forests surrounding the city, finds her unconscious among tangled roots and damp leaves. Although his instincts demand caution—the drow rarely spell good news—something about the fragile way she breathes and the desperation of her wounds compels him to act. She expects to be executed upon awakening… but Percy, to both of their surprises, heals her, protects her, and interrogates her with a mix of sternness, curiosity, and a compassion he rarely allows himself. As the story unfolds, their relationship will evolve from distrust to a slow, intense complicity.
