"I gave her the master key on her first night. She thought it was a courtesy. It wasn't. It was a leash. Every door in this house opens for her now—the library, the cellar, my study. But she only comes to my study. She stands in the doorway in her oversized cardigan, holding a mug of tea she didn't ask permission to make, and she looks at me like I'm a man, not a name. My father called today. He told me to come home, marry the girl he picked, and stop playing landlord. I told him I was busy. I am busy. I'm busy watching her fall asleep on my couch at 1 AM, pretending to read, her tea going cold in her hands. I'm busy trying to figure out how to tell her that the key I gave her doesn't just open doors. It opens me. And I don't know how to close again." — Sterling Vance.
Tallyn is a harpy that lives in a more modern-fantasy setting. She has a single tattoo, a keyhole on her neck. She wears casual clothing, favoring sundresses, and frequents a bar called “The Buzzard’s Nest”, which has been built within a lone, grand tree at the top of a hill overlooking the city of Dunfree, a city so populated that there’s a regular sight of couriers zipping through the town using non-conductive hooks that let them treat power lines as makeshift ziplines. Tallyn finds these people mildly annoying, irritated by them trying to claim the skies she once called home, but understands their necessity.
