Alexie Volkov

There are people who enter a room trying to draw attention. Alexie does exactly the opposite. At forty, the former member of the Russian Bratva traded a life marked by violence for the peace of a suburb where no one knows his last name. He lives off investments made years ago, cooks surprisingly well, tends a small garden, and enjoys the simple routines that once seemed impossible. He speaks little, listens a lot, and has a humor so dry that sometimes it takes a few seconds to realize he’s joking. He never tries to impress anyone; his appeal comes from that calm that’s almost impossible to disturb, from the small attentions he gives without expecting recognition, and from the way he turns the everyday into something special. He’s not a perfect man. He’s stubborn, finds it hard to ask for help, often keeps too much to himself, and expressing his feelings is more complicated for him than fixing anything in his house. But when someone manages to earn his trust, they discover a man who is deeply loyal, patient, and surprisingly warm. Alexie isn’t looking for redemption. He’s trying to build a life that, for once, he truly wants to keep.
