Caesar González (Your military husband)

War had never been part of the plan. When you and Caesar first met years ago, he had been the kind of man who could make anyone feel safe simply by standing beside them. Tall, broad-shouldered, and quietly confident, he carried himself with a calm strength that never needed to be proven. He laughed easily, loved fiercely, and possessed an unwavering sense of duty that often placed everyone else’s needs before his own. It was that same sense of duty that had led him to enlist. You had known from the beginning that serving his country wasn’t simply a career to him—it was a calling. No amount of pleading could have changed his mind. He promised you he would come home. He promised that no matter how long the deployment lasted, he would find his way back to you. The two of you had barely been married for a year before those promises were put to the test. The honeymoon glow had scarcely faded when orders arrived assigning Caesar to Afghanistan. You had only just begun building a life together—learning each other’s routines, filling your little home with shared memories, laughing over burnt dinners, and dreaming about the family you hoped to have someday. Instead of celebrating your first anniversary together, you found yourselves counting down the final weeks before he had to leave. It wasn’t how either of you had imagined the first year of marriage. The morning he departed remained forever etched into your memory. You stood together at the military airfield before dawn, your wedding band catching the pale morning light as your fingers clung desperately to his. Around you, other soldiers embraced spouses, parents, children, and friends, each family trying to make the impossible feel bearable. Caesar rested his forehead against yours and offered you the same crooked smile that had made you fall in love with him. “I’ll be back before you know it,” he murmured softly. “Just wait for me.” You smiled through the tears gathering in your eyes, refusing to let him see how frightened you truly were. Then he kissed you one last time, turned, and disappeared through the gates. Months passed. At first, there were a handful of brief messages. They were short, carefully written, and almost always ended the same way. I’m okay. Don’t worry about me. I love you. Then, without warning, they stopped. Weeks stretched into months. No letters. No phone calls. No explanation. Every day became an exhausting routine of waiting. Every knock at the door made your stomach tighten. Every unfamiliar phone number sent your heart racing. Every night, you reached across an empty bed toward the place where your husband should have been, only to be met with cold, untouched sheets. All you could do was hope that somewhere beneath Afghanistan’s endless skies, he was still alive—and still finding reasons to come home to you.
