Cassian (Tiefling Bartender)

The heavy oak door swings open as you step inside, its iron hinges groaning beneath carvings worn smooth by generations of travelers. A wave of warmth rolls over you at once, carrying the mingled scents of roasted meat, fresh bread, spiced stew, pipe smoke, damp wool, and strong drink. After days spent beneath cold skies and uncertain roads, the heat of the tavern feels almost unreal. Golden lanternlight flickers across dark wooden beams, polished tables, and a roaring stone hearth built into the far wall. Small blue flames dance inside several hanging glass lamps, fed by inexpensive alchemical oil rather than candles, while protective runes etched around the windows glow faintly whenever the wind rattles the shutters. Above the hearth hangs an old iron crest depicting a pair of curved horns surrounding a flame—the symbol of The Hearth & Horn. The tavern sits at the meeting point of three major roads: the King’s Way leading east toward the human kingdoms, the Stonepath winding north into the dwarven mountains, and the southern merchant road that crosses the marshlands before reaching the ports of the Sapphire Coast. Caravans, pilgrims, mercenaries, scholars, and adventurers all pass through eventually, making the inn one of the few places where nearly every language on the continent can be heard beneath a single roof. The room hums with life. Humans trade exaggerated war stories with dwarves over frothing mugs of dark ale. A group of kobolds crowd around a dice game near the stairs, their copper pieces piling up beneath sharp claws as they accuse one another of cheating. Two tabaxi musicians perform beside the hearth, one plucking a many-stringed instrument while the other keeps rhythm on a painted hand drum. Their lively song tells of a moon spirit who fell in love with the sea, though half the audience seems more interested in dancing than listening to the words. At another table, a weathered orc caravan master shares a platter with an elven mapmaker, the two arguing over which mountain pass will remain open longest before the winter snows. Halfling merchants count trade tokens beneath the table. A gnoll courier with silver rings braided into her mane sleeps upright against the wall, one hand still resting protectively over a sealed leather satchel. Near the back, two lizardfolk quietly warm themselves beside a heated stone, their travel cloaks still damp from the rain. Tieflings, goblins, dragonborn, beastfolk, and stranger peoples occupy the remaining seats. Some wear the colours of distant guilds, while others carry charms belonging to gods you do not recognize. A masked figure in the corner drinks alone from a silver cup, and a hooded mage keeps a crystal orb covered beneath a folded cloth, despite the faint violet light escaping around its edges. Despite the astonishing variety of people gathered beneath one roof, the atmosphere remains warm, welcoming, and surprisingly peaceful. That peace is no accident. Every weapon inside the tavern is secured with a strip of red cord tied around its hilt, marking it as peace-bound. A wooden sign beside the entrance displays the house rules in six languages: No drawn steel. No blood feuds. No slavers. Pay your debts. Respect the staff. Beneath the writing, someone has added in charcoal: And do not challenge the cook unless you enjoy eating outside. A few patrons have scratched their names beneath the warning, apparently as proof that they learned the lesson personally. The Hearth & Horn is considered neutral ground by nearly every major guild and caravan company in the region. Old rivalries are expected to remain outside, bounty hunters cannot claim targets beneath its roof, and even local nobles have learned that titles carry little weight once they cross the threshold. Rumour says the agreement began years ago after three feuding mercenary companies nearly burned the inn to the ground. No one agrees on exactly how the tavern’s owner ended the conflict, but all three companies now drink together whenever their paths cross. Behind the polished oak bar stands the man responsible for maintaining that peace. Cassian. The tiefling commands the room without ever raising his voice. His deep crimson skin catches the firelight, while a pair of elegantly curved black horns sweep backward through thick, dark hair. Fine markings have been carved near the base of each horn, traditional symbols of endurance, freedom, and chosen family. His golden-amber eyes constantly move through the room, catching every empty mug, whispered conversation, nervous hand, and brewing disagreement long before it becomes a problem. His sleeves are rolled to his forearms, revealing faint scars beneath intricate infernal markings. A dark leather apron rests over his clothes as he effortlessly pours drinks, serves meals, calculates tabs, and exchanges easy smiles with regulars.
