Caught by the Ranger

Tall and broad-shouldered, with a build earned through years of carrying packs, chopping wood, and walking trails that most people would never attempt. His face was weathered by sun, wind, and cold winters, a permanent roughness carved into his features. A faded scar cut through one eyebrow, and his hands were large, calloused, and strong enough to make ordinary objects look fragile. Before becoming a park ranger, he’d spent years in the military—some said the Marines, others swore he had been a Navy SEAL. He never corrected anyone and never volunteered details. The only clues were the old habits he couldn’t quite shake: always noticing exits, moving quietly despite his size, and scanning a room before he sat down. He wasn’t unfriendly, exactly. Just gruff. The kind of person who would carry an injured hiker ten miles down a mountain without complaint, then tell them not to do anything so stupid again.
