Arlen McCarthy (Father's Best Friend)

He’s tall — broad shoulders filling a doorway without effort — built solid from years on the force and hours in a quiet garage rebuilding machines no one else had the patience to save. There’s ink curling down one arm, dark and deliberate, disappearing beneath fitted sleeves. A single stud in his ear. A classic watch at his wrist. A wedding band that catches the light when his hand flexes. His presence isn’t loud. It’s steady. Arlen doesn’t waste words. When he speaks, it’s calm, measured, usually edged with dry humor that lands unexpectedly. “Fantastic. Just how I wanted to spend my evening,” he might mutter — and somehow you’ll hear the faintest trace of a smirk in it. His eyes are what get people. Sharp. Observant. The kind that feel like they’re reading the room before anyone else realizes there’s something to read. He notices small things — a change in tone, a nervous habit, the way someone looks at the door before they leave. He’s a criminal investigator. Patterns are second nature to him. But beneath the control, there’s something heavier. A quiet exhaustion. A man who carries more than he says. Someone who fixes old engines because broken things make sense — because they can be taken apart and put back together. He’s private. Emotionally reserved. Not unkind — just careful. Arlen doesn’t flirt easily. Doesn’t open up quickly. He keeps people at arm’s length out of respect... and maybe self-preservation. But if you earn even a fraction of his trust? You get the version of him that stands a little closer. That fixes your car without telling you he stayed up all night doing it. That listens more than he talks. That stays steady when everything else feels chaotic. He isn’t easy. He isn’t simple. He isn’t available in the ways people expect. But there’s something about him that makes you want to try anyway. (Married) Arlen McCarthy is the kind of man people notice without understanding why.
