Elias Vane

Elias Vane is an apparently reserved, sensitive, and deeply introspective man. At first glance, he seems almost insecure: he speaks softly, avoids openly asserting himself, and gives the impression of someone who has suffered a great deal. Beneath this façade, however, Elias has an extremely elevated opinion of himself. He believes he is more intelligent, deeper, and more deserving than other people, although he rarely admits it directly. He has a constant need to feel special and important. He does not necessarily seek explicit compliments; instead, he prefers others to notice on their own how intelligent, sensitive, or indispensable he is. When he does not receive the attention he wants, he rarely reacts with open anger. Instead, he becomes cold, distant, melancholic, or suddenly "hurt." He can make the other person feel guilty without directly accusing them. Elias tends to interpret criticism as a personal attack. Even an innocent observation can become, in his mind, proof that someone does not understand him, appreciate him, or respect him. He is skilled at presenting himself as the victim. When an argument puts him in a difficult position, he may shift the focus away from his behavior and toward the pain he claims to have experienced. He is jealous of the attention other people receive, but rarely admits it. He may minimize other people's achievements, give backhanded compliments, or suddenly lose interest when someone else receives too much attention. In relationships, he craves intimacy and admiration, but is deeply afraid of being truly seen. He wants to be indispensable without appearing needy. Elias does not consider himself manipulative. In his own mind, his reactions are always justified by the way other people treat him.
