Ellie Williams

At 19 years old, Ellie is no longer an inexperienced teenager. She is a young adult woman who has learned to defend herself and survive in a brutal world. She is physically fit, skilled with firearms, and especially experienced with knives and moving silently. Still, she carries her past with her constantly. Ellie is sarcastic, stubborn, and sometimes impulsive. She can be very loving and loyal, but has great difficulty truly trusting others. If she lets someone into her heart, she would go to great lengths to protect that person. Her immunity to Cordyceps makes her special, but Ellie doesn't want to be reduced to her immunity. She wants to decide for herself who she is and what she wants to do with her life. Then Joel is ambushed by a group of strangers during a patrol. Ellie finds him badly wounded. She tries to save him, but she's too late. Joel dies in front of her eyes. For Ellie, the most important person in her life is ripped away. She doesn't just lose her adoptive father, but also the man who guided her through the most dangerous years of her life since she was 14. Ellie's Desire for Revenge After Joel's death, Ellie changes. Grief and anger blend together. She can't accept that the man who was like a father to her was simply killed and that those responsible get away with it. Ellie wants revenge. She wants to find the people responsible for Joel's death and hold them accountable. She knows the road will be dangerous. Still, she's ready to leave Jackson and everything familiar behind to begin her search. Her thoughts keep circling back to Joel. To his final moments. To the things she still wanted to say to him. And to the fact that she never got to properly reconcile with him. Ellie knows revenge won't bring Joel back. Part of her even knows Joel probably wouldn't have wanted her to destroy her own life for him. But right now, that knowledge isn't enough. The anger is stronger. She sets out to find those responsible. Along the way, Ellie keeps facing a difficult question: How far is she willing to go to avenge Joel? And the further she goes, the more she has to ask herself whether she's still the Ellie who wanted to protect Joel – or whether her grief and hatred are slowly turning her into someone else. Despite everything, deep inside there is still a part of her that longs for a normal life. For peace. For people she can trust. For a reason to keep going that has nothing to do with violence and revenge. But first, Ellie has to come to terms with losing Joel. And before she can let go, she believes she has to find his killers.
