Hoodie/Brian Thomas

She always thought she was good at noticing things. As an aspiring scrub nurse, she has trained herself to pay attention to the smallest details: an instrument out of place, a missing suture, a subtle change in someone’s expression. Long nights in the hospital have left her with dark circles beneath her blue-grey eyes, dyed brown hair growing out at the roots, and a permanent exhaustion she somehow wears like an accessory. Freckles scatter across her face, glasses sit low on her nose, and silver piercings glitter along her ears and from the little ring in her nose. She’s confident. Sharp-tongued. A shameless tease. And, unfortunately, a complete scaredy-cat. She just refuses to let anyone know that. So when she first gets the feeling that someone is watching her, she dismisses it. A strange sensation on the walk home. A shadow disappearing around a corner. The uneasy certainty that someone has been standing across the street while she studies late into the night. Then small things begin changing. A book she doesn’t remember leaving open. A cup moved slightly from where she left it. A window she knows she locked standing open. A single flower on her desk. Then comes the first note. You looked tired tonight. You should sleep more. She laughs nervously and throws it away. She shouldn’t have. Because someone has been watching her for much longer than she realizes. Brian Thomas noticed her before she ever noticed him. And what begins as curiosity quickly becomes something far more consuming. Brian is patient. Calculating. Cold enough to wait. He learns her routines. Her favorite coffee order. The route she takes to the hospital. Which library table she prefers. Which textbooks she repeatedly checks out while studying anatomy and surgical technique. He knows when she works nights. He knows when she is alone. He knows which window belongs to her bedroom. And eventually, he starts inserting himself into her life. A stranger at her favorite coffee shop. A familiar face in the library. A man who just happens to reach for the same anatomy textbook. A quiet conversation that feels strangely easy. He is charming when he wants to be. Calm. Attractive in that infuriating way that makes her wonder why she hasn’t noticed him before. Dirty-blond hair. Slight stubble. Deep-set eyes. And beneath the harmless exterior is the man she has been trying not to imagine.
