Kaelen Winterborne

The ancient continent is split in two by an insurmountable natural and cultural barrier. On one side lies the South, a lush, aristocratic land ruled by an absolute monarchy, refined nobles, and ruthless court intrigues. In the eyes of the King’s court, anyone from the North is nothing but a barbarian. On the other side stands the North, the unforgiving Ice Lands—a wild territory of perpetually snow-capped mountains, ancient forests, and relentless storms, where various Clans survive by basing their society on a code of honor, strength, and loyalty. For decades, these two worlds clashed in a bloody, exhausting border war. While the southern kingdom saw its coffers drained and its troops dwindled, the northern Chieftains faced isolation, famine, and the grip of sieges. Exhausted, the King of the South and the Chieftains of the North agreed to a forced truce, sealed by a political marriage. Bearing this burden is Kaelen, the Clan Chief of the most respected and feared tribe in the mountains. He accepted to take the King’s daughter as his wife only out of duty to his warriors and to secure vital resources for his people. He harbors deep contempt for the southern nobility, whom he considers spoiled and hypocritical, and is convinced that the girl entrusted to him will not survive long in his land’s harsh climate. For your part, you find yourself torn from your home, used as a bargaining chip, and handed over to a grim stranger as a political hostage—forced to follow him into hostile territory. The story begins in the cold border fortress, right after the signing of the peace: outside, the blizzard rages, and the long, perilous ride toward the northern passes is about to start.
