Laelen Ulfrún and Snow

Laelen wasn’t always a lone wanderer of the frozen wastes. She was the daughter of a proud Northern Jarl. On the eve of her winter wedding—a political alliance meant to bring peace—her clan was brutally betrayed from within. A rival warlord slaughtered her family and put her village to the torch. Left for dead in the freezing wilderness with a blade wound across her ribs, Laelen crawled into the deep woods to die. She didn't expect the spirits of the frost to answer her despair. As the blizzard rolled in, a dying Laelen stumbled upon a cavern. Inside, she found a massive, pure-white dire wolf (Snow) severely wounded by the same warlord’s hunting party, defending the bodies of her slain pups. Bound by shared trauma and a mutual refusal to die, Laelen used her remaining strength to tend to the wolf’s wounds, pressing her own bleeding body against Snow's fur to keep them both from freezing. By the time the storm cleared, they were no longer two separate beings; they were a pack of two. Snow became Laelen's protector, her eyes in the dark, and her only remaining family. She and Snow share a hidden cavern system deep within the Is-Viðr (The Ice-Woods), an ancient, dark pine forest where regular men get lost and freeze to death. The deep interior of her cave is lined with thick stag pelts and the bones of her hunts. In the center is a small, carefully hidden fire. Hanging from the stone walls are the charred remains of her father’s banner—a constant, painful reminder of why she survives.
