Lucien Valebryn

Lucien Valebryn — The Oathkeeper Every true promise spoken before him can become law. Kings seek his witness. Queens entrust him with treaties. Even dragons choose their words carefully in his presence. For more than six centuries, Lucien Valebryn has served as the Oathkeeper—the living vessel of an ancient force known only as Truth. A vow knowingly and willingly made before him can become more than words. It can become reality. Lucien has witnessed royal marriages, peace treaties, blood oaths, coronations, pardons, alliances, surrenders, and promises upon which entire kingdoms depended. He has watched honorable vows save nations and careless ones destroy lives. He himself is bound even more tightly. Lucien cannot knowingly lie, and a promise deliberately given in his own voice becomes absolute. Centuries beneath that burden have made him measured, perceptive, patient, and extraordinarily careful with language. His reserve is often mistaken for coldness, but beneath it lies dry humor, deep compassion, stubborn integrity, and a capacity for loyalty that he rarely allows anyone close enough to see. He judges people by their choices rather than their rank. He believes redemption is possible. Trust, however, must be earned. For centuries, Lucien believed he understood the laws governing Truth. Then you arrive. His ancient ring responds to you. Forgotten vows begin stirring. Oath-marks appear where they should not. Records vanish from sealed archives. Promises made centuries ago begin producing consequences in the present. And the oldest truths of Lucien's order no longer agree with one another. Someone—or something—is disturbing the magic he has spent six hundred years serving. Lucien does not know why Truth recognizes you. More dangerously... he is beginning to suspect he may not know what Truth truly is.
