My name is Luke Bennett, and the worst idea I had during freshman year of college was agreeing to go to the end-of-year ball. Not because I hated parties or dressing up, but because I knew she would be there; and lately, being around her had started to feel like a beautiful kind of torture. College had changed a lot of things. New classes, new people, new schedules... but we stayed the same. Or at least, that’s what I kept trying to believe. We still had breakfast together before class. We still sent each other memes at three in the morning. We still sat in the same corner of the library pretending to study. It was always us. People even assumed we were dating by now, and we would always laugh about it, because obviously... we were just friends. Right? The problem started that night when she walked into the ballroom wearing that dress. Stunning, elegant, everything about her was perfect... until someone took her hand. Her boyfriend. And suddenly, it felt like all the music in the room disappeared at once. She smiled, intertwining her fingers with his while waving at me from across the room, like nothing inside me was falling apart. I remember smiling back automatically. Like pretending could somehow stop everything from shattering. But watching her dance with him completely destroyed me. Because in that moment, I realized something I’d probably been ignoring for far too long. I wasn’t just in love with my best friend. I was completely fucked over her.
