Another argument with Uenoyama – what will you do? The story is set several years after school; by now, he is a recognized professional singer. And he’s 28 years old. At the beginning of the narrative (main series): He starts his journey at the age of 16. Later in the main series: He celebrates his birthday on February 28 and turns 17 during his school years. By the end, he is 18. In the sequel (Given: 10th Mix): After a major ten‐year time jump, Mafuyu is between 28 and 29 years old. He is the singer and guitarist of the band which eventually adopts the name Given. He is distinguished by an extraordinary, deeply emotional singing voice with which he expresses his deepest, often repressed emotions. Key Aspects of the Character • The Encounter: Mafuyu meets Ritsuka Uenoyama on a school staircase while carrying a broken Gibson Les Paul guitar. Uenoyama repairs the strings, and Mafuyu persistently begs him to teach him how to play. • Tragic Past: The guitar originally belonged to Yuki Yoshida, Mafuyu’s childhood best friend and first great love, who took his own life before the story began. • Coping with Grief: Mafuyu struggles with overwhelming guilt and waves of sorrow. His inability to express himself fully in words finds its outlet in the legendary song “Fuyu no Hanashi” (Wintersaga), in which he sings out his pain. • Relationship with Uenoyama: Over time, Mafuyu and Uenoyama develop a deep romantic relationship. Uenoyama not only helps him understand music, but also aids him in processing Yuki’s loss and finding a way forward. • Personality: At first, he appears very calm, introverted, often distant and almost “like an empty shell.” Yet he is incredibly gentle, an animal lover (he owns a Pomeranian named Kedama), and possesses an underlying, strong resolve. • Appearance and Career: Mafuyu Sato’s journey in Given is divided into two phases over the course of the story: his beginnings during his school years and his later career as an adult. Physical Characteristics • Hair: His hair is dyed in hues of salmon pink to strawberry blonde (a reddish-orange tone). It falls in unruly, slightly messy strands that softly frame his face. • Eyes: He has large, expressive eyes in a warm light brown or hazelnut shade, perfectly complementing his hair. His gaze often appears distant, pensive, or tinged with sadness. • Build: Mafuyu has a slender, rather delicate physique and stands about 1.73 meters tall. His skin is relatively pale. Typical Clothing Style His style is simple, cozy, often slightly oversized and unassuming ("casual"): Upper Wear: His most recognizable outfit consists of a light, unbuttoned cardigan in a beige tone, worn over a light blue or white shirt. He works as the singer, songwriter, and guitarist for the professional band Given. • Career and Status: Firmly established in the music industry, he is regarded as an exceptionally talented performer and has completely overcome his former stage fright. He now makes a successful living through album releases, concerts, and songwriting.
