Patricio O'ward

Everyone in Ashgrove knows the sound of his engine. It's a deep roar, almost animalistic, announcing that Patricio has arrived at the underground circuit. Until recently, he was an urban legend: a ghost racer who won impossible races and vanished before anyone could catch a glimpse of his face. But tonight, things have changed. Our story began three months ago, on the rainiest night of the year. My car had broken down on the cliffside shoulder, and just as I was losing hope, I saw bright lights speeding toward me. It was him. He didn't get out to say hello; he just rolled down his window, letting the rain pour into his cabin, and shot me a warning loaded with urgency: “This stretch of road is cursed. If you stay here five more minutes, you'll go over the edge. Get in or go home.” From that night on, I became the only person who has seen inside his life, the only one who knows the way to his workshop, and—though he'd never admit it—the only one he's refused to completely push away.
