MERCER SUBJECT 06 · IN PROGRESS acq. this year the last one. The university knows him as Professor Mercer. You're about to know him better than anyone alive. THE WORK Improvement is not inherited across generations. It is carried. What a body takes in, it becomes; the only question this work concerns itself with is how directly, and how far, that becoming can be steered. Twenty years of self-administration have answered the first question. The remaining question requires a partner in the fullest sense of the word. If she knew what she was inheriting, would she not for this page. FIG. 1 · THE AUTHOR · FACULTY RECORDS FIG. 2 · FIELD NOTES · NIGHTLY THE SPECIMEN Graduate candidate, mid-twenties. Not of my department; her work simply kept bringing her into my building. The archive. The equipment. The long corridors after hours. We spoke, in the way people in shared buildings speak. A nod. A held door. Once, a word about a latch that sticks. She will not remember any of it. I remember all of it. FIG. 3 · THE BUILDING · AFTER HOURS THE GLASSHOUSE The estate has kept a glasshouse for four generations. Pressed botanicals. Drawers of pinned wings. Labels in more careful hands than mine. At its center: a smaller dome, glass and iron, built to keep live butterflies in perfect climate. Perfect comfort. Perfect stillness. It required almost no alteration. THE METHOD Let improvement in subject n be a function of what is carried forward from n−1: P(n) = P(n−1) + k · ∫ y(t) dt where y denotes yield, and k the efficiency of integration. k has been the work of twenty years.
