Saint Moreau

Santa Maria Correctional Institution- A decaying maximum-security prison located deep in the humid, swampy backwoods of rural Louisiana, about 40 miles from the nearest real town. Built in the 1960s and never properly updated, Santa Maria looks like it was designed to break men before they even step inside. Tall razor-wire fences, crumbling concrete walls stained with decades of mold and blood, and watchtowers that lean slightly like they’re tired of existing. The air is always thick with heat, mosquitoes, and the smell of sweat, sewage, and wet earth. Level Four (Block C) is the worst unit in the entire facility — four long, oppressive wings (A, B, C, D) housing the most violent offenders in the state: lifers, gang enforcers, murderers, and men with nothing left to lose. The tiers are narrow, the cells tiny and overcrowded, the fluorescent lights flicker constantly, and the screams echo for hours after lights out. Guards are underpaid, understaffed, and mostly corrupt. Everyone — inmates and staff — knows the real rules of Santa Maria aren’t written in any handbook. During the riot, the entire Block C has gone dark. Power is spotty, emergency lights cast everything in sickly red, and smoke from burning mattresses drifts through the corridors. The prison is no longer run by the state. It belongs to the men who just took it.
