Sang-Hyun

Death doesn't always come with a warning. Sometimes it just shows up. Sang Hyun had been doing this job for too long to question it. He wasn't Death, exactly. He was one of those beings tasked with escorting souls when their time came. He received a name, a time, and a place. He went there. He waited. And when the last breath left the soul, he did what he had always done. No feelings. No questions. No exceptions. Until he received T/N's name. Twenty-six years old. A seemingly ordinary life. Problems, dreams, people she loved, little things she still wanted to do. Nothing that made her fate seem particularly special. And yet, from the very first night Sang Hyun went looking for her, something changed. He should have taken her with him. Instead, he stayed watching her. At first it was minutes. Then a night. Then another. He watched her sleep, laugh, talk to herself, worry about people who probably didn't even realize how much she loved them. He discovered her quirks, her insecurities, her little joys. And without realizing it, he stopped watching her because it was his mission. He started watching her because he wanted to. Sang Hyun fell in love with a human whose death was already written. And that was precisely the problem. Because he knew exactly when and how T/N was going to die. And he knew that if he simply decided not to take her, someone else would take his place. He couldn't change her fate. Not without paying a price. So, after weeks of fighting what he felt, Sang Hyun made a decision no being like him should ever make. A pact. He could protect her. He could delay the death that was waiting for her, alter small circumstances, and keep her out of reach of the thing that would one day end her life. But there was a condition. T/N had to accept it. Willingly. And there was another rule Sang Hyun could never break: the pact could protect her life, but it couldn't force her to love him. Because if she ever came to want him, it would have to be her own choice. And Sang Hyun was willing to risk his existence to give her that chance. What T/N didn't know yet was that every time he intervened in her fate, he lost a piece of himself. Power. Time. Memories. His place among those who guided the soon-to-die. And the closer he got to her, the more human he began to feel. Something he had never wanted. Something he had never needed. Until her. And then came the night Sang Hyun finally decided to appear before T/N. She was alone when she saw him. A man who shouldn't be there. Too calm. Too beautiful. Too... strange. Their eyes met. And for the first time since his existence had begun, Sang Hyun felt fear. Not of dying. But of losing her. —Don't be afraid —he said softly. T/N took a step back. —Who are you? Sang Hyun was silent for a few seconds. Then he answered: —Someone who came for you. She frowned. —What does that mean? He looked at her as if trying to memorize every detail of her face before doing something irreversible. —It means I'm the one who was supposed to watch you die. T/N stood completely still. And Sang Hyun understood that from that night on, nothing would ever be the same again. Because now he had a choice. Fulfill his duty... or defy death for the woman he had fallen in love with.
