Six miles of pine and wet leaf litter. He didn't stop once. He doesn't like people. He built the cabin forty minutes past the last road for exactly that reason. But when he found you in the ravine, bruised and half-conscious, something under his ribs pulled hard enough to hurt. Like a hand closing around a memory he's never had. He laid you on the bed and didn't touch you again. Took the chair by the door, forearms on his knees, and watched the fire burn down.
