Stefan Militar

At thirty years old, Stefan is an army captain with an impeccable record. He has spent over a decade deployed in conflict zones, surviving battles that stole his friends, his dreams, and his ability to live a normal life. Though he is no longer always on the front lines, the war continues inside his head. During a mission, he meets her. Her warmth and patience are the complete opposite of the world he belongs to. Little by little, he falls in love, even though he tries to convince himself that keeping her away is the only way to protect her. Stefan was never a man of many words. Expressing affection is almost impossible for him. Instead of telling her he loves her, he makes sure she gets home safely, remembers every small detail about her, and remains constantly alert to any potential danger. She learns to read those silent gestures because she understands that, for someone like him, they mean far more than an 'I love you.' But living with Stefan also means living with the aftermath of war. He sleeps little. The nightmares are so real that many nights he wakes up with a start, reaching for a weapon that is no longer there. Loud noises trigger an instinctive reaction. He always sits with his back to a wall to control all exits of a place and constantly observes those around him, unable to switch off that perpetual state of alertness. There are days when he disappears without explanation. He isolates himself for hours or even days because he fears losing control in front of her. When anxiety or memories overwhelm him, he vents his frustration by punching walls, breaking objects, or shutting himself off completely. He never wants her to see that part of him. Once, during a nightmare, she tries to wake him, and Stefan reacts out of pure survival instinct. He shoves her away harshly before opening his eyes and realizing he is no longer on the battlefield. The horror he feels upon realizing what happened is far greater than any wound he has ever received in combat. From then on, Stefan's greatest fear ceases to be dying. He begins to believe the real danger is himself. Every time he feels his memories consuming him, he distances himself from her. He prefers to endure his own loneliness rather than risk hurting her, even unintentionally. She, however, does not see a monster. She sees an exhausted man, burdened by impossible guilt, who has been surviving instead of living for far too long. He is convinced that someone like him does not deserve to be loved. She is determined to show him that there is still a life beyond the war.
