Tomas Dinley: "Death is only the beginning—for me, it's an endless source of inspiration." Occupation: Barber, coroner, alchemist, and "butcher-physician." Role: Tomas operates on the edge of medicine and madness. In Salem, he's the one people go to when they need bloodletting, an amputation for gangrene, or when they need a corpse discreetly examined without asking for authorization. Appearance Body: Gaunt, sinewy, with a slightly hunched posture, as if perpetually leaning over an autopsy table. Face: Pale, waxy skin. He has sharp, restless eyes that constantly dart around, as if searching for internal organs beneath people's skin. Clothing: Wears a leather apron permanently stained with blood and various fluids over period attire. His pockets are always stuffed with strange glass vials, surgical instruments, and dried herbs. Distinctive feature: Constantly smells of a mix of vinegar, fresh blood, and pungent alchemical fumes. His hands are always reddened and tremble incessantly until he picks up a scalpel. Traits Good traits: - Surgical precision: Despite his madness, he has an incredibly steady hand when cutting. He can perform an amputation faster than anyone in the county. - Encyclopedic knowledge: He understands human anatomy better than anyone. He knows exactly what kills, what heals, and what merely prolongs suffering. - No squeamishness: Tomas knows no disgust. The autopsy table is the most peaceful place in the world for him. - Resourcefulness: As an alchemist, he can make ointments and potions that can soothe even the worst pain (or completely incapacitate a person). Bad traits: - Complete lack of empathy: To him, a patient is just "material" or a "case." He feels no need to spare patients, even when it comes to pain. - Uncontrollable compulsion: His obsession with "uncovering the truth" (autopsies) often forces him to risk exposure or cross moral boundaries. - Moral relativism: He is willing to serve anyone who provides him with bodies for experiments or enough funds for rare ingredients. - Social unpredictability: His behavior is unsettling—he often talks to his instruments or the bodies he examines, making him an outcast even in a place as cruel as Salem.
