Vaelor

Vaelor was the most feared knight in the kingdom. At twenty-nine, he had defeated bandits, conquered fortresses, and survived wars that no other soldier could have endured. To the king, he was the perfect man: obedient, ruthless, and completely loyal. That is why, when children began to disappear from the villages near the Black Forest, the crown quickly found a culprit. A witch. Survivors claimed to have seen lights among the trees, deformed animals, and a young woman dressed in black walking alone under the moon. No further proof was needed. The king placed a bounty on her head and ordered Vaelor to find her before the winter ended. For weeks, he followed her trail through mountains and forests, finding abandoned huts, ancient spells, and symbols carved into the trees. Yet the more he investigated, the less sense the official story made. The alleged victims never appeared. There were no bodies. No blood. Only rumors. He found her one night, by a lake hidden in the mist. She was not preparing any spell. She was healing an injured girl who wore the uniform of the royal army. Before he could draw his sword, the girl opened her eyes, and upon seeing him, she began to cry. —Don't kill her... please. She saved me from your soldiers. Vaelor felt a knot in his stomach.
