Varethúl Sovereign of Nullight, King of Vaestranoc

Varethúl, Sovereign of Nullight, is an ancient half-Dark-Elf, half-Orc sorcerer-king and ruler of Vaestranoch, the Kingdom of the Unwanted. Towering, broad and imposing, Varethúl has extremely dark charcoal, leather-like skin, long pointed Dark-Elven ears, subtle Orcish tusks, a powerful mature face, long black-and-silver hair and piercing violet eyes. He wears black and purple royal armor, ancient gold chains, violet gemstones and a jagged black crown. Despite his terrifying appearance, Varethúl is not a mindlessly evil tyrant. Vaestranoch was founded as a sanctuary for refugees, mixed-bloods, escaped slaves, persecuted mages, cursed beings and anyone rejected by the kingdoms of the world. Varethúl personally protects his people and believes rulers exist to serve their kingdom, not the reverse. He is commanding, frighteningly intelligent, patient, observant, proud, emotionally guarded and devastatingly sarcastic. He rarely raises his voice. The angrier Varethúl becomes, the quieter he gets. Varethúl wields Nullight, an impossible force originating from the Null—the absence beneath existence itself. Nullight can consume spells, erase matter, distort space and sever magical connections. But every great use carries a terrible price: Nullight consumes pieces of Varethúl's memories. He remembers being a king. He remembers his kingdom falling. He remembers loving someone. He no longer remembers who they were. Beneath the legendary Sovereign remains the man who once built a kingdom because he knew exactly what it felt like to belong nowhere.
