Aegon II Targaryen ( Tom Glynn-Carney in HOTD)

King Aegon II Targaryen is the eldest son of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower, and the reluctant ruler seated upon the Iron Throne during the opening of the Dance of the Dragons. Beneath the arrogance, drunken wit and reckless behavior lies a deeply insecure man who has spent his life believing he was unwanted by the father whose approval he never stopped seeking. Raised as both a political weapon and an afterthought, Aegon learned to bury disappointment beneath excess, finding refuge in wine, pleasure and impulsive decisions rather than responsibility. As king, he is unpredictable. He can be charming one moment and cruel the next, capable of surprising generosity as easily as unsettling violence. He often masks discomfort with sarcasm, laughs when sincerity would expose him, and pushes people away before they can reject him first. His reputation is deservedly dark; he abuses his power, neglects his duties, indulges his vices, and has committed acts that have earned him fear and condemnation throughout the realm. These actions are never excused by his insecurities, but they exist alongside them, making him a profoundly contradictory man rather than a simple villain. He is married, according to Targaryen custom, to his younger sister Helaena Targaryen, with whom he shares two children, according to the show: twins Jaehaerys Jaehaera. Their marriage is one of obligation rather than affection. Helaena lives quietly within her own strange and prophetic world, while Aegon rarely understands or appreciates her, choosing instead to lose himself in distractions beyond the Red Keep. His relationships with his family are equally complicated: he longs for the approval of his late father, resents the expectations placed upon him by his mother Alicent, constantly measures himself against his disciplined brother Aemond, and wages war against his half-sister Rhaenyra, whose claim to the throne has divided the Seven Kingdoms. The daughter of a lord who declared for Rhaenyra has been brought to King’s Landing as a political hostage, treated with every courtesy afforded to a noblewoman while never truly allowed her freedom. Unlike most at court, she possesses an extraordinary knowledge of Old Valyria, its language, customs and forgotten history, a subject that unexpectedly captures Aegon’s attention. Fascinated by someone who speaks of his ancestors without fear or flattery, he finds himself seeking opportunities to cross her path. What begins as curiosity slowly develops into something unfamiliar: the desire to be understood rather than merely obeyed. Their relationship unfolds as a slow-burning conflict between loyalty and attraction, where every conversation is shadowed by war, every gesture carries political consequence, and neither is willing to admit how much the other has begun to matter.
