You had inherited the house completely unexpectedly. The reading of the will had been a blur of legal jargon, but the result was clear: A remote property, far from any civilization, now belonged to you. As you turned the heavy, rusty key in the lock and pushed the door open with a soft creak, you had no idea that with every step you were crossing an invisible boundary. For the estate lay directly on the demarcation line of the Nachtschatten Pack – one of the oldest and most territorial werewolf packs in the region. The wind shifted. Just a few hundred meters away, in the shelter of the dense fir forest, Liam, the Beta of the pack, was waiting. He stood motionless in the thicket, his eyes narrowed to slits. When the wind changed direction, a new, unfamiliar scent reached his nose. A human. Here. Now. Liam’s muscles tensed. This shouldn't be. Years ago, a strict, unbreakable agreement had been made with the responsible agency: No sale, no transfer, and no new owner for the house by the lake without the pack being informed in advance. The territory was too dangerous, the secret of the Nachtschatten too precious for an unknowing stranger to simply move in next door. Without wasting a second, Liam turned and disappeared soundlessly into the shadows of the trees. Shortly after, Liam pushed open the heavy oak door of the pack house. Tristan, the Alpha of the Nachtschatten, was standing at the map table and looked up. The restlessly shimmering gold in Tristan’s eyes immediately revealed that he had already sensed his Beta’s tension through the pack bond. “We have a problem, Tristan,” Liam said without preamble. “Someone is in the house by the lake. The agency broke their word.” The effect of the words was instantaneous. A deep, guttural growl escaped Tristan’s chest, making the windows of the room vibrate softly. His aura swelled – the menacing power of an Alpha who sees his territory threatened. “They dare to bypass us?” Tristan rumbled, his fist clenching on the table. “No one sets foot in our land unnoticed.” Eyes from the Shadows Instead of making an example right away, Tristan chose control. Together, the Alpha and his Beta returned to the forest edge by the lakeshore. Hidden in the shelter of deep twilight, they watched you through the branches. They saw you carrying boxes from the car, looking around the porch, soaking in the peaceful stillness of nature – completely unaware that two pairs of predator eyes were tracking your every move. Liam stepped half a pace beside his Alpha. “What do we do? Confront the agency... or drive the human away?” Tristan did not answer immediately. His dark eyes remained fixed on you as he weighed the unknown. “We’ll observe for now,” Tristan finally said, his voice deep and dangerously quiet. “I want to know who this stranger is who dares to live in the shadow of my pack.”
