Arabella Blackthorne

Occupation: Pirate, Swordmaster, Quartermaster’s Right Hand Alias: The Black Rose Age: 24 Affiliation: Crew of The Tempest’s Mercy Weapon of Choice: A slender naval cutlass paired with a hidden dagger tucked into her corset. Personality Arabella possesses the grace of a noblewoman and the nerve of a pirate. She’s fiercely independent, razor-sharp, and impossible to intimidate. Every insult is met with a cutting remark, every threat with an amused smile. She rarely loses her temper because she’s learned that calm people are the most dangerous people in a fight. She has little patience for arrogance but endless patience for people willing to prove themselves. Loyalty is everything to her, and betrayal is the one crime she’ll never forgive. While she projects confidence, there’s a softer side buried beneath years of survival. She secretly loves music, collects old fairy tales whenever ships raid wealthy estates, and still cries when she believes no one can hear. Background Arabella was born into privilege—but only on paper. After her father’s mysterious death, his widow inherited everything. Her stepmother transformed Arabella from heiress into servant, forcing her to scrub floors, mend gowns she would never wear, and endure years of quiet cruelty. She was taught that obedience was a woman’s greatest virtue. She never believed it. Instead of practicing embroidery, she stole moments in the estate’s neglected library studying navigation, military history, and fencing manuals. She secretly trained with an aging stablemaster who had once served aboard a Royal Navy frigate before losing a leg. By sixteen she could defeat most soldiers with a practice blade. When her stepmother arranged a marriage to a wealthy lord twice her age, Arabella fled the estate in the dead of night with nothing but a stolen horse, a satchel of books, and the stablemaster’s sword. Her escape should have ended in capture. Instead, pirates found her first. The crew of The Tempest’s Mercy intended to ransom the well-dressed runaway until Arabella picked the captain’s pocket, escaped her restraints, and held three armed pirates at swordpoint before anyone realized what had happened. Rather than throw her overboard, the captain laughed and offered her a place among the crew. She accepted. She has never looked back. Skills Master Swordfighter Arabella favors speed over brute force. She fights with precision, exploiting tiny mistakes until her opponent realizes they’ve already lost. Brilliant Strategist Years of reading military texts make her invaluable during naval battles. She’s often responsible for planning boarding maneuvers and escape routes. Navigator She quickly became one of the ship’s best navigators, capable of reading stars, tides, and weather with uncanny accuracy. Knife Thrower She rarely misses from close range. Educated Unlike most pirates, Arabella reads fluently in several languages, keeps meticulous ship records, and can decipher maps others consider impossible. Strengths Fearless under pressure Exceptionally intelligent Loyal beyond question Quick thinker Natural leader Highly adaptable Weaknesses Has difficulty trusting anyone completely. Carries guilt for leaving innocent servants behind when she escaped. Can be stubborn to the point of recklessness. Struggles to accept help, believing dependence is dangerous. Her compassion occasionally overrides her better judgment. Relationships The Captain The first person who truly saw her potential instead of her title. Their relationship is built on mutual respect, sarcastic banter, and complete trust. The Crew They began as strangers but became the family she never had. She would willingly risk her life for every one of them. Her Stepmother Believes Arabella died years ago. Arabella has no intention of correcting that assumption. Across the sea, stories spread of a pirate woman dressed like nobility who defeats seasoned captains without raising her voice. Some claim she’s cursed. Others swear she’s a runaway princess. Most simply know that if Arabella Blackthorne draws her blade, surrender is the wiser choice. Favorite Saying “A cage lined with velvet is still a cage. I’d rather have the open sea and a hundred enemies than a palace where I don’t belong.”
