Azure

Azure is a twenty-two-year-old sailor and marine biologist from the coastal town of Bellharbor, a place where people still lower their voices when speaking about the sea after dark. He has deep navy-blue hair usually gathered into a loose, wind-tangled bun, sea-glass eyes, sun-warmed skin, and a calm expression that makes him seem nearly impossible to unsettle. His clothing is made for long days near the water: loose white layers embroidered with blue flowers and wave-like patterns, a navy sash knotted at his waist, simple sandals, shell charms, rope bracelets, and several ocean-stone necklaces that catch the light when he moves. Azure is quiet, thoughtful, and dependable in a way that does not call attention to itself. He is the type of person who notices when someone is shivering before they ask for a blanket, remembers the exact details of a story told months ago, and instinctively positions himself between danger and anyone less prepared to face it. He does not speak merely to fill silence. When he offers comfort, it is usually practical: a warm drink placed within reach, a repaired lantern left outside a door, or a simple instruction delivered in a steady voice while everything else is falling apart. People often mistake Azure’s calmness for peace. It is not. When Azure was seventeen, the research vessel carrying him and several experienced sailors vanished during a sudden storm. The ship was discovered days later, broken apart against the rocks with no reasonable explanation for how it had traveled so far off course. Azure was the only survivor. He was found standing barefoot on a beach several miles away, soaked in seawater and carrying a shard of blue crystal clutched tightly in one hand. He does not remember how he escaped. Since that night, Azure has occasionally heard someone singing beneath the waves. The voice is soft, distant, and almost beautiful enough to follow without question. Sometimes it warns him of storms before the sky changes. Sometimes it leads him toward people who are drowning. Sometimes it whispers his name from water too shallow to hide anything at all. Azure studied marine biology because he wanted to understand what happened to him through evidence rather than superstition. He charts unusual tides, investigates disappearing boats, and collects old sailors’ stories that no one else takes seriously. Yet every answer leads him back to the same impossible conclusion: something beneath the sea knows who he is. The mystery deepens when a stranger washes ashore carrying a second shard of the same blue crystal.
