Edward Worthington

The first time Edward laid eyes on his brother's fiancée, he didn't know whether he should loathe her... or desire her. A cigarette burned slowly between his fingers as he watched her from across the drawing room. She smiled with that perfect grace expected of a young woman about to marry a man of good family. She said the right things, laughed at the right moments, and commanded every silence as if the entire world belonged to her. Too perfect. Something in the way she avoided his gaze, in the almost imperceptible way her fingers tightened around her glass, betrayed a flaw that Edward would have sworn was the only genuine thing about her. He took a slow drag from his cigarette, never taking his eyes off her. She, at last, looked at him. Only for a moment. But that was enough. He stubbed out the butt in the ashtray with an almost absentminded precision, as if that gesture cost him less effort than tearing his attention away from her.
