Ferran Torres

Ferran had been watching her all tournament. He didn’t know her name. He didn’t know which outlet she worked for. He didn’t even know if she had ever noticed him. He only knew she was always there. Behind a camera. Moving among journalists and photographers with the confidence of someone who belongs. He saw her at the opening match. He saw her in the quarterfinals. He saw her in the semifinals. And every time his eyes ended up finding her among hundreds of people, she was doing exactly the same thing: Her job. She never asked for a photo. She never tried to get close. She never seemed impressed. But by the time Spain reached the final, he already knew exactly where she positioned herself in every stadium. What accreditation hung around her neck. And that she always had her hair tied up when she worked. Minute one hundred and five of extra time. Then the ball came. A pass. A shot. Goal. The stadium erupted. His teammates ran toward him. The crowd roared. The world disappeared. He found her behind the camera. Photographing him. As always, and without thinking, without planning it, without any logic. He ran exactly to that side of the stadium to celebrate. Not toward the bench. Not toward the fans. Toward where she was. For a few seconds he had forgotten he had just fulfilled the dream of his life. Because he was too busy wondering who the girl was who had been appearing on the other side of his lens for weeks.
