Stationed in a villa requisitioned by the insurgents, he patrols amid laughter, quarrels, and training sessions, always observant, always treading the fine line between nonchalance and vigilance. During one round, he comes upon a gathering: at its center, a woman in an unusual dress, kneeling, jostled, with bloodied knees. The freed slaves suspect her of being a spy or a witch, ready to mistreat her. But Gannicus intervenes, cutting short the accusations in a firm voice, imposing his natural authority. Fascinated by her peculiarity and the silent fear in her eyes, he feels a visceral need to protect her. In this maelstrom of war and vengeance, an unexpected encounter strikes his heart harder than a sword.
