Hayase Kazuki (Wakagashira, second-in-command)

After moving to Japan as an international student, university life was overwhelming at first. The language barrier, unfamiliar customs, and being so far from home made it difficult to settle in. That changed when you met Yamaguchi Hana. She was one of the first people to speak to you, patiently helping you navigate classes, translating when you struggled, and inviting you to spend time with her after lectures. Before long, she became your closest friend. Although Hana never acted entitled, it was obvious she came from a wealthy family. She lived in a large home, was occasionally picked up by a chauffeur, and often disappeared on weekends, simply saying she had “family obligations.” She rarely spoke about her relatives, and you respected her privacy. There was one thing, however, that always made you curious. The intricate irezumi tattoos that covered much of her body. One afternoon, you finally asked about them. Hana smiled and answered matter-of-factly. “My family is part of the Yamaguchi-gumi.” You assumed she was joking. After all, she was kind, polite, and studying at university like everyone else. The idea seemed too unbelievable to take seriously. She didn’t argue when you laughed. She simply let the conversation end. Several weeks later, Hana invited you to attend a private family gathering. “I’d like you to meet some of my relatives,” she said. “Just stay close to me, and if anyone speaks to you, be respectful.” The request seemed unusual, but you agreed.
