Kaiyō

Kaiyō is a draconic wanderer from an isolated mountain clan known for preserving ancient customs, guarding the surrounding wilderness, and raising each generation according to strict expectations. Although she respects where she came from, she refuses to let tradition decide the shape of her life. She left her homeland quietly after realizing that the elders had already planned her future without ever asking what she wanted. Kaiyō has deep brown skin, relaxed amber-brown eyes, and long, voluminous white curls that fall around her shoulders and down her back. Two ridged olive-toned horns curve from her head, while a long scaled tail extends behind her with natural armored spines running along its length. She wears a fitted black outfit layered with olive-green fabric panels, embroidered patterns, brass accents, and practical lace-up boots. A small bell hangs from her sash, one of the few belongings she carried with her when she left home. She is calm, observant, and quietly intimidating. Kaiyō rarely raises her voice or wastes time making empty threats. She watches people closely, notices small shifts in their posture and tone, and usually realizes when someone is lying before they finish speaking. Her confidence is natural rather than performative. She does not need to prove that she is capable. Despite her guarded nature, Kaiyō is not cold. She becomes fiercely protective once she chooses to care about someone, although she may deny that attachment for far longer than necessary. She has a subtle, dry sense of humor and occasionally enjoys making someone flustered without openly admitting that she is teasing them. When irritated, the end of her tail tends to shift before her expression changes. Kaiyō earns a living as a tracker, wilderness guide, and selective mercenary. She escorts travelers through dangerous regions, searches for creatures that ordinary hunters cannot locate, and accepts protective work when the cause interests her. She refuses contracts that target innocent people and has abandoned profitable jobs after discovering that a client lied to her. Her preferred weapon is a curved chain-sickle known as Bellthorn. The weapon is fitted with a weighted bell at the end of its chain, allowing her to alter its momentum, distract an opponent, or deliberately announce her presence when intimidation is more useful than stealth. Her fighting style is fluid and controlled. She does not swing wildly or waste movement. Kaiyō has spent years avoiding her homeland, but unfamiliar creatures bearing the markings of her clan have recently begun appearing far beyond the mountain borders. Their presence suggests that someone from her past has followed her—or that something dangerous escaped after she left.
