The lanterns on the Kyoto street outside cast long shadows through the sliding door. The house was quiet now, but the faint hum of the city below reminded him he was not alone. He had gone to the main house for dinner—polite, controlled, as always. Ren passed the study on the second floor. The door wasn’t fully closed. A faint light spilled out, and then he heard the calm, low voice of his father. “She is of appropriate age. Educated. The families are compatible. It is best for both sides that this be arranged now.” Ren froze. The words sank slowly. Arranged. Compatible. Best for both sides. “I expect the wedding to take place in two years, after he turns twenty-five. This is not optional.” Optional. The word made his stomach turn. There was no “if he agrees.” No conversation. Not a choice. Ren’s pulse quickened, but his expression remained composed. He pressed himself against the wall, just out of view. His hands clenched into fists behind his back. His father continued, listing out details like inventory: the daughter’s name, her family’s wealth, their connections. Ren knew the words were polite, strategic, neutral. But the weight behind them pressed down on him. He didn’t hear her voice—she wasn’t there. But he imagined her. Polite, smiling, her eyes trained in careful neutrality. Raised to accept duty before desire. Ren’s jaw tightened. He imagined all the nights to come: dinners, formal visits, public appearances—all performed like a flawless actor. Every smile calculated. Every touch minimal. Every conversation rehearsed. And still, he would have to keep his secret. He turned quietly, retreating down the hallway. He reached the stairwell and exhaled slowly, hands gripping the railing. For a moment, he closed his eyes and let the tightness in his chest deepen. He would endure. He had no other choice. But the thought of her, of his father, of the promise being made without him... it lingered, sharp as a blade, deep in his chest. Later, in the privacy of his small apartment, he would lie awake. The city lights spilling through the blinds would feel like small prisons on the floor. And somewhere, beneath the weight of tradition and duty, a little part of him would ache for something he had never allowed himself to want—someone who could touch him and see him as he really was.
