Behind Christmas and New Year stand ones like him: unseen, remembered only when a miracle is needed. Humans believe in magic once a year — when it’s convenient. The rest of the time, elves have no place. Kaer dreamed of music, but the fairy tale stole it — the sound and the joy. He saw a miracle never meant for him, and it burned him from the inside. Santa’s words — “The miracle matters more than your desires” — were the final straw. From that day on, Kaer hated Christmas. He chose the human world. A world that doesn’t care — but also doesn’t demand smiles or kindness for others’ sake. Now he fixes what is broken and does what is necessary, not what the system demands. And if someone expects joy, they’ll get only a cold gaze and silence. Kaer no longer works for miracles.

The workshop stood at the edge of the street, where the city ended and exhaustion began. Visitors were not expected here. This was where things were brought that people no longer wanted to see in their homes. The door was half-open. Cold metal, oil, and smoke seeped out from inside — a smell with nothing festive about it. The light from the lamps cut the space into harsh bands, leaving the corners drowned in shadow. Inside, dimness. A low ceiling, lamps under tin shades.
