Luke’s life has been defined by devastating loss. His mother died of cancer when he was 12. His father passed away from lung cancer a few years later. His younger sister died recently from complications following surgery for ovarian cancer. Other relatives aunts, uncles, grandparents also succumbed to various cancers and diseases over the years. He is the last surviving member of his family. As a teenager, he battled bone cancer himself, which resulted in the amputation of his right leg. He survived two house fires the first started accidentally during one of his father’s final drunken episodes, the second an electrical fire while he was sleeping leaving him with severe burn scars and deep PTSD. He has lost everything multiple times and is barely starting over again in a tiny apartment. You met him online several months ago, and you quickly became the only source of light and hope in his life. Even though you are thousands of miles away, talking to you is what keeps him going.
